The city of Daejeon is a leading hub in the field of R&D and higher education in Northeast Asia. Daedeok Innopolis started in 1973 as the first government funded Research Park. Daedeok Innopolis is a unique science cluster including over 70 world class research institutes with more than 20,000 researchers and many higher centers, education including Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). With regard to this infrastructure, Daejeon is known as the Silicon Valley of Asia. Yuseong Hot Springs is located at the center of Daejeon. The hot spring is known to be effective in countering many kinds of maladies. The water here contains alkaline minerals such as calcium, and potassium, sulphur, carbonic acid, silicic acid and radium. An especially high concentration of radium is found here. Such alkaline hot springs are known to be good for treating neuralgia and geriatric diseases. Daejeon Modern History Hall opened to the public on October 1, 2013 at the former main building of Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Government, Daejeon (Registered Cultural Heritage No. 18). Visitors can see various scenes of history and the development of Daejeon over the past 100 years from the early 20th century to current times. Daejeon operates a planned exhibition hall, special exhibition showcasing history, architecture, design, folk style and other varied fields as well as a rotation exhibition. Gyejoksan Mountain Red Clay Trail is the nation’s first eco-healing barefoot walking trail, filled with the fresh aroma of pine needles. Visitors can also enjoy a view of downtown Daejeon from Gyejoksanseong Fortress, which was built during the time of the Three Kingdoms. Walking or even running along this 14-kilometer long trail at an altitude between 200 and 300 meters above sea level is a great way to get a healthy body and spirit. →View more
The National Science Museum is a scientific culture facility which studies and exhibits various scientific materials. At its center is the Astronomical Hall, which is the largest dome in Korea. From here you can vividly see the phenomenon of the celestial sphere and the human development of space. It also has the only world-class space theater in Korea. The 242 seats are available on a first-come first-serve basis. It can re-create the appearance of a night sky, the highlight being the view of the starlight at the planetarium. Daejeon O-World (Formerly “Daejeon Zoo”) was established when the Daejeon Zoo and Joy Land, an amusement park, were integrated under the supervision of the Daejeon City Corporation. The project cost a whopping 40 billion won and resulted in the construction of Flower Land (100,000㎡) in addition to the renamed Zoo Land and the preexisting Joy Land. Ppuri (Family Root) Park, located between Bomunsan Mt. and Banghwasan Mt. in Chimsan-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon-si, is a park created under the theme of filial piety, one of the overriding values of Korean society. Opened on November 1, 1997, the park occupies a plot of land measuring 109,091 m² and is filled with unique sculptures and art pieces that remind visitors of their family ties. The sculptures at the park hold a special meaning for Koreans, as each of the 136 sculptures represents each of the different last names of Korea. On the front of each sculpture is the history of the family (name) and on the back is a description of the sculpture itself and other relevant information. →View more
Daejeon National Cemetery covers a vast area of land spanning 330,000㎡. The cemetery is comprised of graves for the deceased patriots, men of national merit, generals, officers, soldiers, etc.
Major facilities include the Memorial Tower and Memorial Gate for paying reverence to the deceased patriots, Patriotic Spirit Exhibition Center displaying photos and articles left by the deceased, and an outdoor exhibition space, where military battle equipments are on display. Other facilities within the cemetery grounds include fountains, statues, sculptures, pavilions, and Hyeonchungji, a man-made pond in the shape of the Korean peninsula.

Baekje Cultural Land is Korea’s largest history theme park that was built to promote the history and culture of the glamorous Baekje period to the world. Inside the Baekje Cultural Land, one can admire the era’s sophisticated architecture and lifestyle through the Sabi Palace (a royal palace), Neungsa (a royal temple of representative of Baekje), Living Culture Village, Wiryeseong Fortress, Gobungongwon (a tomb park representing the noble class tomb style of the period), Baekje History & Culture Museum, Baekje Forest and more. It is equipped with various exhibition and education facilities such as permanent exhibition halls and special exhibition halls displaying the history and culture of Baekje, a theater, and the i-Baekje Experience Hall.
Gungnamji was artificially made in the 35th year of King Mu’s reign (634 A.D.) of the Baekje Kingdom. It was constructed by digging a well 8km south of Sabi (Buyeo’s ancient name) Castle and drawing fresh running water to it through a pipeline from a river flowing 8km away. This pond was designed according to the theories of geomancy (Pungsujiriseol in Korean), to prevent the spiritual energy from Mt. Geumseong to disperse into the air.
